Funding decision on the special call on ecosystem services

The Governing Board of Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation decided on 13th December 2011 to provide prof. Olli Saastamoinen with funding of 249.900 euros for the project Integrated and policy relevant valuation of forest, agro, peatland and aquatic ecosystem services in Finland.

The thematic call Synthesis on ecosystem services was opened in the autumn 2011. The main objectives of the call and the funded project are to analyse and clarify the concepts related to ecosystem services, as well as to prepare a policy-relevant synthesis on the usability, valuation and central indicators of ecosystem services. A further aim is to test a funding instrument of new kind for senior researcheres at professor level.

The Governing Board of Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation decided on 1st November 2011 to provide 2,2 million euros research grants for the year 2012. A total of 90 projects were funded.

The call for research grant applications for the year 2012 was closed on 16th September. Funding decisions regarding the generall call will be made in early November. At the same time, the applicants taking part to the special call on ecosystem services will be informed about the second round of the call.

The call for grant applications opens on 17th August

The call for research grant applications for the year 2012 is open from 17th August to 16th September 2011. All applications must be sent to the Foundation using the electronic E-Nessi system.

In addition to the general call, the Foundation invites applications for a grant meant for a senior researcher for preparing a synthesis on ecosystem services.

The foundation supports scientific conferences and other meetings concentrating on environmental sciences and dissemination of research results. In the summer 2011 the following events are sponsored:

-in June the IXth IIAA International Summer Conference on Environmental Aesthetics with the theme "Aesthetics of Human Spaces: Between Urban and Nature"

-in August the 13th Nordic Soil Zoology Symposium with the main theme "Soil fauna in the changing world: bringing environmental issues form above to the below ground world"

The sixth Environment symposium was a success

The Sixth Environment Symposium of the foundation concentrated on the theme "The Global Environmental Change: Messages from Birds". The role of birds in observing, forecasting and interpreting the current environmental changes was a central question of the symposium that was arranged in cooperation with BirdLife Finland in Hanasaari, Espoo, on 17.-19.11.2010.

Altogether 180 researchers, students and experts participated in the scientific discussions. The abstracts of presentations, the list of participants and photos are available at the symposium website.

The next environmental symposium in November 2010

Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation will organize its Sixth Environmental Symposium The Global Environmental Change: Messages from Birds in cooperation with BirdLife Finland 17.-19.11.2010. The symposium venue is Hanasaari Cultural Centre in Espoo. The symposium will highlight the current simultaneous changes in the environment. The usability of birds in observing, forecasting and interpreting the changes is a central question.

We have invited several international experts to give plenary speeches about different themes of the symposium, such as the following ones:
Biodiversity targets 2010: where are we now? Dr. Ian Burfield, European Research & Database Manager, BirdLife International
How to estimate the changes in environment: birds as indicators. Dr. Richard Gregory, Head of Monitoring and Survey, The Royal Society of the Protection of Birds / European Bird Census Council
Heralds of climate change. Dr. Anders Moller, Université Paris-Sud
Global problems need global solutions. Prof. Franz Bairlein, Institute of Avian Research, Germany

We are also looking for experts on environmental and bird studies to give oral or poster presentations about their research. The presentations will be in English. The first two days of the three-day symposium are devoted to environmental research with a focus on birds while the third day concentrates on bird research of any kind. The symposium will provide a discussion forum for researchers, government officials, students and the general public interested in environment- and bird-related questions.

Maj and Tor Nessling foundation received altogether 289 grant applications in the autumn 2009. On 28th Ocotober the governing board of the foundation decided to give funding for 104 projects. The total sum of grants for the year 2010 is 2,31 million euros. The list of funded projects can be seen here
